Parte il massimo campionato belga e il calendario mette una di fronte all'altra Standard Liegi e Gent che l'anno scorso hanno vissuto stagioni ben diverse, gli ospiti hanno chiuso quinti, i padroni di casa quattordicesimi. L'estate non ha portato la svolta sperata per la squadra di Liegi che dopo aver perso le ultime due gare dello scorso torneo, in amichevole è andato ko tre volte con St. Truiden, RWDM e Paok, per poi pareggiare l'ultima con il Monchengladbach.
