Dopo la netta sconfitta per 2-0 (Rashford-Herrera) in casa del Manchester United al Chelsea serviva una prova di forza, che è arrivata in FA Cup, dove ad essere eliminato è stato il Tottenham. Partita equilibrata ma gli uomini di Conte sono stati più cinici e hanno chiuso nel finale per 4-2 con Hazard e Matic, dando una lezione all'unica rivale rimasta per il titolo del campionato. Il Southampton è a metà classifica e non rischia né di retrocedere né di arrivare in Europa, ma vuole solo togliersi soddisfazioni. Nel match casalingo con il Manchester City la banda di Puel è durata solo un tempo, peraltro orrendo, prima di cedere per 0-3, per effetto delle reti di Kompany, Sanè e Aguero. Il tecnico francese gioca con un 4-2-3-1 che prevede la velocità di Ward-Prowse, Tadic e Redmond a servizi del centravanti Manolo Gabbiadini. Antonio Conte non si discosta dal suo 3-4-3 e dal suo tridente formato da Hazard, Pedro e Diego Costa. Torna in campo il capitano John Terry al posto dell'infortunato Cahill.
